This exercise is most effective when you breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth (you can also exhale through your nose if you wish). When we breathe slowly and extend our exhale, we send a signal to our brain, that everything is ok and we are safe, this then allows our brain and heart to slow and calm down.
