@DanDennett893 years agoFirst there was the music that was created to stand alone (in a sense). Then Maynard added his lyrics which created a new thing (the stand alone music composition plus the lyrical story line). Then Adam created a video and so we have 3 different artistic creations actually. Easier to understand the finished creation in this way (at least to me!). Thanks for the rxn!! ...3

@cheepvodka-gaming26293 years agoThis is one of tool's most straightforward songs, especially on the album it is on. It's about relationships in your life and the importance of communication. The lines I know the pieces fit because I watched them fall away is all about the idea of a relationship in its start and its great and as time passes miscommunication, fighting, and other things start breaking down. The pieces are mildewed and smoldering because of the lack of proper communication it's all turned into fights and people are hating each other. Burning a bridge kinda idea. The temple part is a metaphor for the relationship itself and it's what is crumbling. This also calls back to the old story of the tower of babel where people worked together to build a tower to the heavens and God created multiple different languages to confuse and stop their building. Without communication it becomes hard to work with others. ...1

@bellaann49423 years agoAmazing band. His lyrics hit deep. It's like he's screaming , Wake Up! Then there is the great artist Alex Grey who graces their covers with his talents. It's all put together so well but seems easy to them. Saw them at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. Then in Bham. at the Amphitheater on a light rainy night. The concerts are magical. Check out Vicarious by Tool. ...1

@hockeylvr423 years agoThis song is about relationships. One of the best lines in this song is “Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion”, which does an incredible job of describing a strained relationship. Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer, is a masterful lyricist, evident throughout tools catalogue. You guys should really take 18 minutes out of your day to listen to wings for Marie pt 1 and 2. It’s written in tribute to his mother, who spent 27 years, or 10,000 days, in a wheelchair after suffering a brain aneurysm. Having the lyrics at hand is a must. It’ll hit you with all the feels. ...14

@TheMightyOdin3 years agoFirst time I saw this video I was in another country visiting my grandparents. A small island, population 4500, my grandparents were farmers and lived a very simple life. They had a tv and there was only one channel that the antenna could pick up. I had helped my grandfather pick some fava beans and we were sitting inside the house going through them. Opening the pods and removing the beans. Then all of a sudden this video comes on. I was already a big tool fan and had seen the band live and I knew the song but hadn’t seen the video. My grandfather stopped opening the bean pods and sat silently with me and watched this video. He didn’t speak english and I couldn’t speak his language well enough to have a deep conversation about what we just watched. Now whenever I hear this song I think of him and wonder what was going on in his mind as he watched and listened to this masterpiece. ...

@anthonylama213 years agoMaynard has stated that the songs on the Lateralus album in a nutshell, is about "They're all about relationships. Learning how to integrate communication back into a relationship. How are we as lovers, as artists, as brothers - how are we going to reconstruct this beautiful temple that we've built and that's tumbled down? It's universal relationship stuff." The song Schism, he has remarked, was specifically about the relationships between the members of Tool. They go 5 to 10 plus years between album releases. During that time out doing their own things. This song symbolizes the struggles to create and get on the same page while ultimately knowing there is a way. ...
@
@tonysoto89493 years agoThis song has zero to do with religion. Maynard wrote this song after a hard break up. When he says I know the pieces fit he is meaning he knows their relationship worked but due to lack of communication it ended. When he says the temple toppled over he means the foundation to their relationship which is a temple. ...29

@
@garretthilb83463 years agoI think this one is about watching a relationship(temple) fall apart(the pieces fit) and then trying to rebuild it.(rediscover communication) and how silence stops(atrophies) any chance of understanding ezchothers pain, and for reconciliation. The worst part is that this inability to reconcile is between people who are supposed to "love." Many times these relationships are doomed but, like in the end of the song where he keeps repeating "I know the pieces fit," some people just can't move on and then the relationship turns TOXIC. Maybe this song is a prelude to "Pushit?" Also, tool videos are pretty much just irrelevant eye candy, for the most part. ...3
