Being a soldier often requires some real-life MacGyvering. But you don’t have to be in the military to benefit from tips like putting duct tape on your feet to prevent blisters or using cotton balls and Vaseline to get your campfire started. Here are 11 hacks from the men and women in uniform that’ll make your life a lot easier! For instance, there’s a very particular hack when it comes to those super shiny soldier shoes. Take a generous amount of shoe shine, rub it on your leather shoes or boots, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Then, go over the area with a lighter or flame, and get ready to see your own reflection! For a finishing touch, use a clean damp cloth to polish the surface. If you want to know about other tricks, watch the video! TIMESTAMPS: Duct taping your feet 0:40 Ladder lacing for added ankle support 1:25 Maxi pads for first-aid 2:38 Putting sugar on wounds 3:17 Running tights for added warmth 3:52 Super shiny shoes 4:19 The military tuck 5:00 Cotton and Vaseline as a fire starter 5:42 Lose a tail when driving 6:18 Making a pristine bed 6:39 Peeing in the shower 7:34 #militaryhacks #lifehacks #makeyourlifeeasier Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Nowadays, soldiers use duct tape to prevent blisters and calluses caused by those notoriously uncomfortable military boots. - If you still have a lot of lace left (although you shouldn’t with this laddering technique), just wrap it around your ankle and then tie it. Tuck the remaining laces inside your shoe. - In case of an emergency, you can use sanitary pads to prevent a wound from bleeding out. - Speaking of first-aid in a pinch, you can put sugar on a wound to prevent bacterial infection. Don’t worry because this unconventional medical treatment has scientific backing based on a study by the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine. - Running or compression tights aren’t just for jogging or making a fashion statement. You can wear them under almost any pants without them being noticeable. - Covering cotton balls in petroleum jelly and lighting them on fire, you get a strong but steady flame that keeps on burning. A great hack next time you go camping! - If you ever feel like the driver in your rearview mirror is following you, all you gotta do is make 4 consecutive turns in a row. This is usually the best way to lose a tail! - According to the medical community, it actually prevents and cures athlete’s foot! Urine has natural properties like uric acid and ammonia that help fight fungal infections. @jacksonj79753 years ago Duck tape is actually called “Duct Tape” and was originally created for fixing air ducts, since it’s strong and an air tight seal. 103

@maryellencook95286 years ago (1) You can use honey in place of sugar. This was also used by the Ancients as they didn't have refined sugar 3000 years ago.
    (2) Tampons for deep puncture wounds until you can get to the closest emergency services. It is the same principal as the maxipad and has a string for easy removal. I had suggested this to a nephew who was in the Marines who was almost deployed to Afghanistan 10 years ago. He thought I was crazy until I explained the rationale. It could be the difference between life and death from bleeding out.
    (3) Shampoo as body wash. I got this from a nephew who was in the Air Force. With limited time to shower during Basic training at Lackland AFB (3 minutes is what he said), shampoo your hair and scrub your body as the lather rinses down. While I definitely take longer than 3 minutes, I do use the shampoo this way. Soap is soap and saves me the cost of a body wash.
In response to all of the comments about sugar in the wound making you diabetic, increasing bacterial growth, or darkening the scar: really? It WON'T make one diabetic- thats genetics and poor diet. While refined sugar, over the long run, might present a slight risk of bacterial growth, it is used in a pinch by Home Health nurses to debride, or clean, bed sores and prevent infection. Raw honey or sugar is best. There is a honey based gel used in nursing homes to dress open sores on legs and arms. And I would prefer a darkened scar to amputation of an appendage or limb from gangrene any day. Food for thought. Have a nice day, y'all.

@DanteWesker6123 years ago I'm glad I found this video. My great grandpa Bradley died earlier this week. I attended his funeral yesterday. His name was Robert Eugene Bradley. During the funeral, I found out that he used to serve in the Navy in the early 1900s long before I was even born. So after he was put to rest, I made a promise that I would join the Navy to honor him. ... 2

@Derwin06 years ago The name Duct Tape came from the silver version being used to tape ceiling ducts. The green version was called Ordinance Tape in the military. 9

@davidrandal74763 years ago Fishnet stockings works well in winter. They keep air pockets forming under your pants and if they get wet, your body heat will dry them out in minutes. Learned that one during Winter Warfare Artic Training 3

@DJdemojohnay6 years ago here is a common one that wasn't in the video, to save space in dressers or while packing clothes, just fold pants, shirts and underwear in half and roll them up real tight. Creates a lot more space than you think. 12

@Killer9008XD6 years ago 1.The mk4 cold weather boots we wear all year round are by far the best boots i have ever worn - how heavy they are.
    2. In Canada the dress code is straight lace for the dress boots. for combats it is cross laced starting the top (leading edge) on the ouside of the boot.
    3. The only useful thing on here for civilians to know.
4.Sugar on wounds is a last ditch effort in a pinch as it causes bad scaring of the tissue.
5.Wearing layers of cloths is not military. We have set uniforms, we do not wear running tights under our combats.
6.Burn shining destroys boots and causes boot cancer. A less harsh boot polishing cheat is to use after shave after you polish the boot. This will also cause boot cancer but not as quickly if then treated with mild heat to help the aftershave evaporate and finish with a nylon.
    7. If our shirts are "ill fit" you go to supply and get a new one issued..
8.We do use the cotton and Vaseline(petroleum jelly). but the Vaseline is very flammable. It is the fuel and the cotton is the wick.
    9. I have never once been told to make 4 consecutive turns..
10.They are called hospital corners.. do you not want to mention the strict measurements of the fire blanket how to fold the pillow case and the other 3 sheets? Hospital corners are everywhere.
    11. We showered in open showers in the barracks i was in... so no.
