'PAST SIMPLE' Keywords. Hey everybody, it’s Mark, an English teacher. If you are looking for information about Past Simple, you are in the right place! I’m about to reveal some easy ways to use ‘Past Simple’ and will give you a lot of examples for using this grammar tense. I’m going to share with you the Top 10 ‘Past Simple’ keywords. 1) The first Past Simple keyword is yesterday. For example, Jack did his homework yesterday. Yesterday, the weather was fine. In this statement, it’s mentioned that it was a good day yesterday and that kind of weather is over. 2) The day before yesterday. For example, You told me about it the day before yesterday. 3) Long ago. For example, A long time ago people hunted dinosaurs. Here we can notice the Past Simple keyword ‘ago’ that means ‘back’. 4) In 2019, in WWII During WWII, the Nazis completely destroyed Warsaw. When we have a certain period of time in the past, we should use ‘past simple’. ‘During WWII’ is a specific period of time. I completed my Ph.D. in 2014. When we have a certain year or time, we should use ‘Past Simple’. 5) When …? / At what time …? For example, When did that couple get married? Similarly to the rule with years, the question pronoun ‘when’ is used as a past simple keyword. At what time did you come back from school? Here we have the marker ‘at what time’ that is also used in the past simple. 6) Used to When I was a child, I used to play the violin. When I was a student, I did sport a lot. It means that in my student years, I often went in for sports, but now I don’t do it. 7) Once upon a time Once upon a time, I met Sarah, and we got married. In most cases, ‘once upon a time’ is used at the beginning of stories. 8) Lately I finished my work lately. ‘Lately’ in most cases is used as a ‘present perfect’ keyword, but in American English, they often use ‘lately’ in the past simple. Lately, it snowed a lot. 9) Last year, last month, last week Last year, I passed all my exams with flying colors. Last week, she got a really well-paid job. 10) For is, finally, the last past simple keyword I was a teacher at school for 3 years.
